Managing your professional identity in the 21st century is a complex task, how you are perceived as a professional is influenced by so many things. Everything you do: the way you act in meetings, the way you write, the way you dress and every tiny thing you do online can all influence how your actions are interpreted by colleagues.

The International Librarians Network is all about learning more about the library and information professional around the world, but there are also many things we can learn from other professions. There is a growing movement in the business world to consider our identities as a ‘personal brand’ allowing you to proactively shape how you are perceived just like companies can shape their brands. There are many resources available to help you build your personal brand and get the most of out of your career and for the next two weeks, we will be exploring how they can be applied to the world of libraries.

Here are some questions to get you and your partner started in thinking about your personal brand:

  • Have you ever had a meeting with a colleague in which you felt your message was not being received? What did you do about it?
  • What social media platforms do you use? Do you use them for personal purposes or professional ones? How you manage this?
  • Do you have your own website or blog? How does this represent you professionally?
  • Do you know where you want to be in your career in 5 years? How are you creating the professional you want to become?

In Spain’s profession it is closely linked to the public world, and it is true that at some point feel from the field of private enterprise that you are at a disadvantage in terms of projects or initiatives, but when you take contact with other colleagues working in fields different, you see that both the training, the ideas or the way you interact with them is no different, just you as you think you are. Although the problems in Spain of some companies that give value to our sector, if the practitioner strives to go against that establishing contacts with other current and developing exchange and communication environments.

    The media I use are various: SEDIC your blog, website and profile on Linkedin; IweTel with its different areas, with different groups Linkedin communication, these fundamentally, though I’m up on other blog topics related to the media that expand my knowledge in technology and sector level.

    So far I have not developed a blog, but I have a project in place to do this, I think that despite the information overload to which we are subjected to no longer channel differentiation and personal projection, very interesting.

    As for where I see myself in five years, dedicating it to the niversaria training it is what I want and what I’m working on, or outside the profession but get this goal. In Spain between the crisis and the low value given to senior well-trained profession gradually being phased out.
