Changing our view of the world

Here at the ILN, our program is all about helping we library and information professionals to expand our view of the world, one peer mentoring partnership at a time. At the end of a long week, browsing through my favourite sites, I came across this and it just seemed to fit. Happy Friday everyone!

  1. Unfortunately while the land masses have been reversed, the oceans haven’t – perhaps a bit literal of me but to fully reverse the globe would probably encourage a change in perspective more effectively. I guess most people would have seen a map projection like this one, https://www.google.com.au/search?q=true+world+map+projection&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=979&tbm=isch&imgil=X2D_LvHcHARMlM%253A%253BBBifyOtXA21y6M%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.viewsoftheworld.net%25252F%25253Fp%2525253D752&source=iu&pf=m&fir=X2D_LvHcHARMlM%253A%252CBBifyOtXA21y6M%252C_&usg=__qw87P5cxbPClBQW4xAR_f2YqqxM%3D&ved=0CCYQyjc&ei=90csVYbpHIawmwXQ3oHIAg#imgrc=1LC-gMLviH4hoM%253A%3BEqi5o2CcckG41M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fupload.wikimedia.org%252Fwikipedia%252Fcommons%252F3%252F34%252FGall%2525E2%252580%252593Peters_projection_SW.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fen.wikipedia.org%252Fwiki%252FGall%2525E2%252580%252593Peters_projection%3B2058%3B1314 – sorry for the ugly address, which maps the “true area” of continents. The Mercator projection, which we’re used to seeing, was developed for a globe-shaped map and distorts the relative size of countries when viewed flat.
